Mind-Body Disorders: Multiple Chemical Sensitivities

How does MCS develop and how can you overcome it? This article will explain both.

Although I never dealt with full blown MCS, for a period of time I was sensitive to various smells. My reaction was mild compared to what others are dealing with. I mostly had a heightened sense of smell, and perfumes and colognes, as well as other skin care products, would give me a headache. In addition, I only used non-toxic products in my home, made my own unscented lotions, and all my other skin care products were unscented. While I still like using non-toxic products, and don't particularly like strong smelling lotions or shampoos, I don't get a headache anymore nor do I have any other symptoms.

Many of my friends however have struggled with more severe MCS, but have found healing through a mind-body approach. Much like chronic pain is created by the brain, because the brain perceives danger, the symptoms of MCS are also created by the brain. It does NOT mean the symptoms are all in your head. Even though all mind-body symptoms are created by the brain, they are real symptoms in your body.

During my healing journey, I used a brain retraining program called the Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS), created by Annie Hopper. Annie herself dealt with such severe MCS that she had to live in a tent for a period of time. In the article below Annie explains why and how MCS develops and what you can do about it.

You can also take a look at the many healing testimonies on that page. DNRS is one of the many mind-body tools that can help you overcome MCS and other chronic illnesses. Ultimately you need to teach your brain that these smells are not dangerous. Once you remove the fear of smells and symptoms, the reactions will stop.
